When people ask me why I care so much about the ingredients in our makeup and skincare, I tell them that they would care, too, if they knew the levels of harmful chemicals in their bodies. This issue is universal and personal, yet no one knows to question the ingredients in our products, because everyone assumes they are safe.
It’s fascinating how one day can change your life. I first learned about the dangers of microbeads (those multi-colored mini scrubbers in your face wash) from a NY Times article. Like most people I had no idea that those seemingly innocuous bright pink, orange and blue beads that make our faces tingle with joy are actually contributing to widespread environmental pollution.
Earlier in the year I had the privilege of being featured on Into The Gloss as a contributor to their Top Shelf series. I was so thrilled to share my favorite beauty products and routines with the world. Unfortunately, I had not yet realized that the products I was using on a regular basis were exposing my body and our planet to thousands of unsafe chemicals.
Here at Beauty Lies Truth we seek to create a space where women can openly and honestly share their own intimate beauty stories. We are thrilled to publish this personal essay by our dear friend and Bustle contributor Kristin Collins Jackson. Like many of us, Kristin struggled with maintaining healthy skin and hair. Keep reading and you’ll learn that it wasn’t until she rejected harsh chemicals and embraced natural alternatives that she achieved her desired beauty results.
