3C hair forms tight corkscrew curls roughly the width of a pencil, packed densely enough that the eye reads texture rather than individual curls. It carries more volume than any other type 3 pattern and loses about half its length to shrinkage.
It also sits on the busiest boundary on the chart. More people search for the difference between 3C and 4A than for either type on its own, and the answer turns on one thing that most guides skip.
What Is 3C Hair?

3C is the tightest of the three curl patterns. The spirals have a clear circumference but a small one, they spring back sharply when pulled, and they sit close enough together that scalp is rarely visible from above.
The strand itself is usually medium to coarse, and the curl completes a full turn within a short span of length. That combination produces the density this type is known for, along with the dryness, since the same tight spiral that creates volume is what prevents scalp oil from ever reaching the ends.
Is My Hair 3B or 3C?
Diameter separates them, and spacing confirms it.
| Type | Curl diameter | Comparison object | Definition | Shrinkage |
| 3B | A third to half an inch | Marker barrel | Individual ringlets visible | Around a third |
| 3C | A quarter inch or less | Pencil or a drinking straw | Corkscrews touch, reads as texture | About half |
| 4A | Under a quarter inch | Crochet needle | Tight coils in a defined S | Up to three quarters |
Curls you can pick out individually from a few feet away are 3B hair. Curls that merge into one mass at that distance are 3C. The hair type quiz reads pattern alongside width, density and porosity, which matters more at the tight end of the chart than anywhere else, since porosity governs product choice on this type more than the code does.

How Do I Know If My Hair Is 3C or 4A?

Shape rather than size. A 3C curl is a spiral, so it wraps around an axis and holds a round cross-section through each turn. A 4A coil is tighter but it also travels in a defined S as it spirals, and it has a springier, more compressed feel between the fingers.
Wet behaviour is the practical test. 3C forms visible curl clumps in the shower with conditioner in the hair, and each clump has a recognisable spiral. 4A clumps too, but the pattern reads as a zigzag inside the coil rather than a smooth loop.
Shrinkage sets the outer bound. 3C typically loses about half its length; 4A often loses three quarters. Anyone whose hair reaches the collarbone wet and the ear dry has moved past 3C. The hair types chart covers all twelve codes.
3C Hair vs 4C
Two codes apart, and the confusion is understandable because both are dense and both shrink heavily. The difference is whether a defined curl exists at all.
3C has a visible spiral you can trace with a finger. 4C has a very tight zigzag with no consistent curl pattern, so it clumps in sections rather than in individual curls and shows the most shrinkage of any type on the chart. Anyone comparing 3C and 4C directly is usually somewhere in the type 4 range rather than at the top of type 3.
How Rare Is 3C Hair?
Nobody knows, and the confident answers circulating are guesses. No published dataset ranks the twelve Walker codes by prevalence.
The measured research uses a different system. A L’Oreal Recherche team led by Roland de la Mettrie assessed hair from 1,442 people across 18 countries for Human Biology in 2007, building eight categories from curve diameter, curl index and wave count. The Walker codes were not among them, so nothing in that work counts 3C.
There is a further reason to distrust prevalence claims about this code specifically. 3C was not in Andre Walker’s original system at all. It was added later by the natural hair community, which means it has less consistency behind it than the codes around it, and self-reporting at the 3C boundary is correspondingly noisy.
Is 3C Hair African American?
No hair type belongs to an ethnicity. Type 3 and type 4 patterns are common in people of African descent, and they also appear across Caribbean, Latin American, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, South Asian and mixed-heritage populations, with more variation inside any one group than between groups on average.
Establishing that was the purpose of the de la Mettrie work cited above. It replaced the older African, Asian and European groupings with measured geometry precisely because those categories failed to describe the range within each one.
The system’s own history matters here. Andre Walker built it in 1997 for a mass-market book rather than as a scientific tool, and it has drawn steady criticism for arranging patterns in a numbered sequence that reads as a ranking. It is shopping shorthand for a strand, not a description of a person.
Is 3C Hair Naturally Frizzy, and What Causes Fairy Knots?
Frizz on 3C is dryness showing itself rather than a separate condition. Scalp oil cannot travel a tight spiral, so the ends receive almost none of it, and dry cuticle lifts in humidity. Adding moisture solves more frizz on this type than any smoothing product will.
Fairy knots are different and specific to tightly curled hair. A single strand curls back on itself and ties an actual knot, usually near the end where the hair is oldest and driest. They cannot be combed out. Cutting each one just above the knot is the only remedy that does not cause breakage, and reducing them comes down to keeping ends moisturised, protecting hair overnight, and trimming regularly rather than growing damaged ends out.
A 3C Routine That Holds
Cleanse two or three times a week. The American Academy of Dermatology ties frequency to how oily the scalp actually gets in its healthy hair guidance, and dense curls hide oil at the root far longer than looser patterns do, so scalp condition rather than appearance is the thing to judge by.
Detangle only when soaking wet and slick with conditioner, working in sections from the ends upward with fingers or a wide tooth comb. Dry detangling on 3C causes breakage rather than frizz, which is a more expensive mistake.
Layer leave-in, then cream, then gel onto wet hair in small sections, and rake each product through before scrunching. Dry without touching, diffuse on low, and break the cast once completely dry. Sleep in a satin bonnet or on a satin pillowcase, which preserves more definition overnight than any product does during the day.
Products for 3C Hair
Weight is welcome here in a way it is not on looser curls. Rich conditioners, weekly deep masks and creams with real substance all work, because a dense spiral can carry them without collapsing.
Slip matters more than hold. A conditioner that lets fingers pass through without snagging prevents more breakage than any strengthening treatment repairs. Clarify every three or four weeks, since layered products build up quickly on this type. The natural shampoo guide covers which cleansers clear residue without stripping.
3C Hair Growth and Shrinkage
Curl pattern has no effect on growth rate. Scalp hair advances at about 0.35 millimetres a day, roughly half an inch a month and six inches a year, the same on 3C as on straight hair.
Shrinkage hides most of it. At around fifty percent, six inches of growth shows as three, which is why length appears to stall on this type without anything actually being wrong. Breakage accounts for the rest, since every turn in a tight spiral is a mechanical stress point and dry ends snap at those points. Length retention rather than growth stimulation is what moves the needle, and that means moisture, gentle detangling, protective styling and regular trims.
3C Hair Colour
Tightly curled hair takes colour unevenly because the outside of each spiral faces the applicator while the inside is shielded, so all-over blocks of colour look patchy once the hair moves. Balayage and chunkier placement suit the pattern better.
Lightening is the bigger consideration. Bleach raises the cuticle on hair that is already dry by structure, and on 3C that shows up as looser, frizzier curls rather than just a lighter shade. Anyone going lighter should treat deep conditioning as routine rather than remedial, and expect toning to become part of the schedule, which is what purple shampoo handles.
3C Hair on Men

Rarely covered, and length works differently here than on looser patterns. A 3C curl completes a turn within an inch, so the pattern shows at almost any length, and the usual complaint is width rather than the hair looking undefined.
Ask a barber for a curly cut done dry rather than a clipper guard, since cutting wet on hair that shrinks by half produces a result nobody expected. A leave-in and a light cream on damp hair defines it; brushing it out flattens the pattern into a shape that is harder to manage. Scalp showing at the temples or crown as curls separate is worth reading against the thinning hair guide rather than treated as a texture issue.
Measure the curl once, then build the routine around porosity and moisture. On 3C those two decide almost everything the code does not.
