What Is the Rarest Hair Type? The Answer and Its History

The answer repeated everywhere is 1A, the pin-straight, very fine type at the far end of the chart. It is also an answer nobody has ever measured.

No published study has counted how common each of the twelve hair type codes is. The claim circulates because it has been copied between beauty sites for years, and the research that does exist on hair shape uses an entirely different system that was never mapped onto the one shoppers use.

Why 1A Gets Called the Rarest

The reasoning behind the claim is intuitive rather than empirical. 1A requires hair that is both completely without bend and unusually fine, and most straight hair carries at least a slight wave somewhere along its length or enough width to read as 1B or 1C instead.

That logic is reasonable. It is also just logic. Nothing in it comes from counting people, and the same argument could be built for 4C or for any code at the edge of a category, since every extreme is by definition less populated than the middle.

The Problem With the Claim

Trace the current answer back and it thins out quickly. The AI Overview on this query attributes the claim to a single blog post on a hair supplement brand’s website, and the sources beneath it cite each other rather than any dataset.

Self-reporting makes it worse. People pick their own code from a chart, and the boundaries between adjacent codes are soft enough that a single head of hair can read differently depending on humidity, haircut length, product and whether it was judged wet or dry. Where the Typing System Came From

Andre Walker built the system in 1997 and published it in his book Andre Talks Hair! He was Oprah Winfrey’s stylist at the time, and the chart was designed as a shopping shortcut, a way for readers to find products suited to their hair rather than a classification instrument.

The system has also changed since. 4C was not in the original scale, which stopped at 4B, and it was added later by the Black natural hair community, which found the existing codes inadequate. 3C has a similar history. A companion study led by Genevieve Loussouarn extended the sample to 2,449 subjects across 22 countries, explicitly to define hair types without reference to ethnicity.

Even eight groups turned out to be more than the method could reliably support. What the Largest Study Found

The biggest dataset on hair characteristics to date surveyed 19,461 individuals across multiple countries, recording curl degree as straight, wavy, curly or kinky using a visual scale, alongside thickness, dryness and damage. It found meaningful differences by country and by gender, and reported thick hair as most common among African participants at 40.7 percent and least common among Asian participants at 26.3 percent.

Is Curly Hair Rare?

No, and this is where the rarity conversation gets the numbers backwards. L’Oreal researchers estimate that more than a third of people worldwide have curly hair, rising toward forty percent by 2030 as populations shift.
Straight hair is common, wavy hair is common, curly hair is common, and tightly coiled hair is common. At the level the research can actually measure, no broad category is rare. Rarity only appears once the categories are cut finely enough that nobody has counted them.

Is There a Rarest Hair Type in Order?

Lists ranking all twelve codes from rarest to most common circulate widely and none of them cite a source. They cannot, because the underlying count does not exist.

The same applies to the second and third rarest. Those searches are looking for positions in a ranking that was never compiled, and any site presenting one is presenting an opinion formatted as data.

Which Hair Type Is Most Fragile?

This question does have an answer, and it is more useful than the rarity one. Tightly coiled hair breaks more readily, because each sharp bend in a strand concentrates mechanical stress at that point rather than distributing it along a smooth curve.

Worth stating clearly, since the usual framing implies otherwise: the material is not weaker. Research into breakage across ethnic groups found the chemical composition of tightly coiled hair is not significantly different from other hair, and the higher breakage comes from fibre geometry and handling instead. Fine straight hair is also fragile, for a different reason, since a thinner strand carries less load before it fails.

What to Do Instead

Rarity is an interesting question and a useless one for choosing products. A code shared by millions and a code shared by thousands need exactly the same thing: an honest read of strand width, density and porosity, none of which appear on the chart.
