1A hair is the straightest code on the hair typing chart. It air dries flat from root to tip with no bend, no wave and no natural lift at the crown. The code describes shape and nothing else, which is why two people who both read as 1A can need completely different products.
Most guides to this type repeat the same three claims. That it is the rarest hair type, that it is always fine, and that it gets greasy faster than anything else. Only one of those survives a check against the research.
What Is 1A Hair?
1A hair shows no visible curl or wave when it is clean, product free and air dried. It lies flat against the scalp, reflects light along a smooth cuticle, and drops a curl within an hour or two of styling. It sits at the far straight end of the 1A to 4C scale.
The letter in the code refers to curl pattern only. Andre Walker built the system in 1997 to help shoppers match products, not to describe hair biology, and nothing in it records how thick a single strand is. Fine hair and 1A hair overlap often enough that the two get treated as one thing. They are not. Wide, coarse strands can grow perfectly straight.
How to Tell If Your Hair Is 1A
Wash it, put nothing in it, and let it dry untouched. No towel scrunching, no diffuser, no brushing while damp. Then read one strand from mid length to end. If it runs straight with no bend anywhere along it, the pattern is Type 1.
Judge it dry rather than wet. Wet hair hangs straighter than it really is, which is the single most common reason a 1B result gets misread as 1A, and product residue does the same thing. Is 1A Hair Rare?
No published dataset ranks the twelve Walker codes by how common they are. The rarity claim circulates across beauty sites and Reddit threads, and none of it traces back to an actual count.
The measured work on hair shape is limited, and it does not use the Walker system at all. The largest study of its kind, published in Human Biology in 2007 by a L’Oreal Recherche team led by Roland de la Mettrie, measured hair from 1,442 people across 18 countries and sorted it into eight categories rather than twelve, using curve diameter, curl index and number of waves. Straight hair was common in that sample, not rare.
Even that eight category system has reliability problems. A later micro-CT assessment noted that two of its curl variables showed meaningful variation between observers, which is a real limit on any claim built from visual classification. Rarity would not change a care routine either way.
Why 1A Hair Goes Flat and Greasy So Fast
Sebum travels down a hair shaft by contact. On a straight fibre nothing interrupts that journey, so scalp oil reaches the mid lengths within a day or two while a tightly curved strand keeps its ends dry for a week. That is the mechanism behind the greasiness, and it is the one claim about this hair type that holds up.
Volume has a different cause. Weight. Fine strands carry very little before the roots give way, and a leave in cream formulated for wavy hair will flatten a 1A head by lunchtime.
How to Care for 1A Hair
Wash on scalp oil rather than on a schedule. For most people with this hair type that falls somewhere between daily and every third day, and the American Academy of Dermatology’s healthy hair guidance ties frequency to how oily the scalp gets rather than to a set number of days.

Volume comes from mousse worked into damp hair before drying, not from product added after. Dry shampoo between washes buys a day. Heat protection matters more than it looks like it should, since thin strands reach damage temperature faster than thick ones do.

On longer hair, face framing pieces and curtain bangs add movement without thinning the perimeter. Heavy internal layering is the standard mistake. It takes weight out of hair that had none spare.
1A Hair on Men
Short hair hides curl pattern. Below roughly two inches a wave cannot complete a full bend, so a 1B or even a 2A head reads as straight 1A hair on a crop. Judge from the crown or the back where the hair sits longest, or wait six weeks. Scalp hair grows at 0.35 mm a day, around half an inch a month, so six weeks is enough length to see what is really there.

Is 1A an Asian Hair Type?
No. Hair shape does not map onto ethnicity, and demonstrating that was the explicit purpose of the de la Mettrie research. It set out to classify hair by measurable geometry precisely because the older African, Asian and European groupings failed to describe how much variation exists inside each one.
Very straight hair is common across East Asian populations. It is also common in plenty of others. The code describes a strand, not an origin.
1A Hair Color and 1A Hair Type
Two different things share the same label. 1A as a hair type means curl pattern. In colorist shorthand, a number plus a letter refers to level and tone, where the number sets depth and the letter sets the tone family, so 1A there means a very dark level with an ash direction.
Fine straight hair does behave differently under colour. The honest limitation is that the code answers less than people expect it to. Strand width and porosity predict which products work better than curl pattern does, and neither one is visible on a chart.
